Fern Cascade, Russian Gulch Fall, Mendocino Coast

Posted by
Gary Hart (California, United States) on 20 June 2012 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

A lovely hike through the redwoods near Mendocino rewards you with Russian Gulch Fall, a fern lined cataract deep in the forest.

From blurred water to star trails, a camera records motion entirely differently than we do. In the fifth installment of my Photographic Reality series I write about using the difference to your photographic advantage.

What a gorgeus spot, Gary. I really like the diagonal tree here with the ferns growing up the side of it in an almost mathematically-perfect spacing between them :-) And the little baby plants growing out of the moss on the tree!!! Good heavens what a paradise! The water just next to the tree is slanting in unison too, of course, and the scene here strikes me of being a spot where nature decided to take a few extra minutes and design this especially fine.I am sure glad that you are presenting this to us. I like to think that I have learned just a small bit from reading what you have written about capturing waterfalls...especially the parts about getting close and small - I like to do that anyway - I like those smaller components of a larger entity that, when "closed-in on," provide us with, and take us to, an entirely different world. Your work is so doggone fantastic !! All the best Gary :-)

ps Gary what lens did you use here, just out of curiousity? Your speedy 105 Macro??

excellent work to focus on the ferns as the main subject and letting the waterfall become a subtle background!
