Oak at Sunset, Sierra foothills

Posted by
Gary Hart (California, United States) on 9 February 2012 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

A couple of weeks ago I went out to the foothills to photograph a crescent moon and Venus conjunction. The moon was obscured by clouds, but the sunset that evening was off the charts. To anyone who's skeptical about the color, let me suggest that you get out more--color in nature can be extremely vivid, even without Photoshop manipulation. This image required virtually no processing. Secrets to capturing natural color include going out well before sunrise and staying out well past sunset, slight underexposure to keep the color from washing out, and isolating the most brilliant part of the scene with a telephoto. I share more of my thoughts on color on my WordPress blog. .

Sensational sky . . I agree on the diagnosis of color - carrying a camera lets us actually see things rather than just looking !

Terrific.........so many newcomers shoot a sunset before the sun has reached the horizon then think "that's it, got it in the bag". This shot just shows that being patient is indeed virtuous.

I completely agree with you, Gary - This magnificent image is so inspiring. I caught a similarly coloured sunRISE in Vermont a few months ago and I know - s you have spoken of here - that nature gives us all the beauty that we need...it is only through a selfishly conceited desire to go over the top and impress others that some foolish ones try to make better that which Nature has already mastered and given to us as a gift... This is absolutely inspirational sir!

brilliant! perfect silhouette against a vivid and burning sky! i agree that the colour is often so vivid in real life - there are days when i take a shot and wonder if the colour will indeed come out as rich as i have seed them at the time...

Yes, I agree with you about the natural colours that Nature produces. This does look fake, but I like it nevertheless, a classic style. ;OD
