Moonlight, Garrapata Beach, Big Sur

Posted by
Gary Hart (California, United States) on 3 February 2012 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

This image from a sunrise shoot at Garrapata Beach a couple of weeks ago was captured as I co-led Don Smith's Big Sur workshop. The tide was up and the waves were exploding, relegating most of the group to the cliffs above the beach. Achieving a workable exposure that revealed detail in the foreground without blowing out the moon was a real test. On my WordPress blog I go into lots of detail on my exposure and processing process, and also say a few words about the importance of synergy between capture and processing in the digital age.

The reflection in the foreground was made possible because you waited until just the right moment to push that shutter. Lovely soft translucent look!

I love the composition and the way the moonlight shines all the way to the sand....Mesmerizing!

Well without yet reading your Wordpress text (which I will do tonight) I must say that this image is all about synergy! The relationships between the softened, foamy waves and the body of the ocean, combimed with that magnificent moon and its glow, followed -and resolved- by the landing onto the sand is all about synergy. This is just a beautiful piece, Gary - with a real feeling of movement and flow, calmness and peace. The colors really help all - That blue of the water is just phenomenal. And, talk about balance - my eyes keep going around in joyful circles from the sand to the waves to the water to the moon and then back again! This is superb sir!! Wishing you all the very best ;-) dj

Great shot. I just wonder why not an oblong picture ?

@Sido: Thanks, Sido. I have both and may in fact provide a horizontal image of this scene as well. I chose vertical because the visual motion in the frame, from the beach, to the rocks, to the waves, to the moon, is vertical. Also, including the moon in a horizontal orientation shrinks it even more than it is here to add a lot of empty space. (I also think the world has enough horizontal seascapes.)

I think Sido needs a lesson about foreground interest and leading the eye....a beautiful scene, gary! 4stars. ;OD

i totally agree about trying to get the capture right in the camera first - to me camera is the primary tool and then Photoshop is a support tool that needs to be treated with caution and not overused... this is a superb photo - really great work on the exposure with the moonlight providing beautiful illumination!
