From the Clouds, Half Dome from Olmsted Point

Posted by
Gary Hart (California, United States) on 26 January 2012 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

For the final sunset of my Eastern Sierra workshop, I take the group to Olmsted Point. It's a great place for a group to spread out and be creative, and many participants haven't seen this perspective of Half Dome. On this evening we arrived to find the scene completely engulfed in clouds--they just had to take my word that Half Dome was out there. But over the next hour or so, the clouds lifted and we were treated to one of the most spectacular sunsets I've ever witnessed.

The best stuff came after the sun was below the horizon. I've already featured one image from that evening, but last week returned to that folder and found this. Over on my Wordpress blog I compare the two, and the decisions that went into their creation.

I really enjoyed your Wordpress blog article, Gary and the comparisons were amazing especially (to me) with that light in the one versus the other I am entranced with the cloaking that these clouds are doing to the cliffs, peaks (in some cases) valleys and slopes! here! This HAD to be a stupendous thing to witness and i am sure that the transitions and changes were even more dramatic and thrilling ! All the ehile, the light and reflections were bouncing and changing. I think (without having been there myself at the time) that this image, here, conveys that feeling and scene the most vibrantly. Especially based on what you had said and what I can surmise simply by viewing these awesome photos! It's almost like sitting in a theater with one of those huge encapsulating screens and really FEELING the transitions as they take place....The witnessing of all of this wonderment, we owe our grattitude to you sir. Just beautiful!
