Poppy Hillside, California Gold Country

Posted by
Gary Hart (California, United States) on 19 July 2011 in Landscape & Rural.

Galen Rowell was one of a kind, a photographer who was (apparently) without fear. Rowell's skill, effort, and energy enabled him to reach places no other photographer would attempt. But I'm afraid there are photographers today who embellish their achievements to the point of absurdity. This blog post is (among other things) a roll of the eyes in their direction.

I'm glad you survived the climb ... and hope that your camera bag contents and tripod survived as well.
The photo was worth it from my perspective and I take it that is from yours also! ;D

This image has always been one of my favorites Gary. Not only do all the elements work in unison, but for me, it's the simple play of light across the poppy field that places it into a higher realm. It's as if Rembrandt shadowed this for you perfectly... OK - a bit of a stretch, but hey, you never know! Wonder how many photographers drove right past this scene without a second glance?

fabulous composition and range of colours.

Worth the climb Gary, I'm sure it would have been just as good if the single guy was standing as straight as the others. However the light and the colour are breathtaking and that's what made the biggest difference.

I just love how the fenceline helps us up the hill as we want to hover over these glorious poppies! And then there's that tree on the left...doesn't look like an oak but it must be -yet, partially without it's leaves, it stands as a very strong focal point as well, aligning itself with the tree at the very top. This view upwards, this perspective, is so magnetic that it just holds me here as I look up, over, and around ....and then I land back on the very beautiful, Gary! This is like a time suspension state with beauty all around and no worries about slipping downhill. I don't remember seeing this one but I will sure remember it now...Just fantastic, Gary...I wish you nothing but the best, sir! DJ
