Forest Leaves, Ten Taypo Trail, Redwood NP

Posted by
Gary Hart (California, United States) on 1 June 2011 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

If you've ever tried to photograph a redwood forest, you know capturing their scale and beauty isn't easy. Last week I was humbled by the Humboldt redwoods of Northern California (assisting Don Smith's Northern California workshop), but difficulty didn't prevent me from coming home with images that please me. This image is the first of several I'll post over the next few weeks; it illustrates the approach that works best for me--I write more about it here.

Hi Gary - I was marveling at this on your Wordpress blog (and FB too!) last night, thinking how perfectly you have caught the light here and transformed the leaves into into electric butterflies, dancing in the sky. The sparkling light from the sun is like bubbles floating upwards. This is the magic that can be seen when we look intimately at larger things to find the beauty that has always been there but our eyes were not seeing it because our mind was directing us to the larger view. Like looking across a sea of poppies and missing the one lone paintbrush! Your words are so instructive and encouraging. I personally LOVE the sun shining through th trees in a forest but I know it makes things really difficult to shoot on larger scale. Seeing and working with the intracacies helops to open up that new view. Thanks again Gary - I love this one very much! All the best! Denny
