The Undiscovered Country, Pages 76 & 77

Posted by
Gary Hart (California, United States) on 8 October 2009 in Landscape & Rural.

Each day while I'm away I'll post images and poetry from my book, The Undiscovered Country. Enjoy!

There's a Certain Slant of Light

There's a certain slant of light,
On winter afternoons,
That oppresses, like the weight
Of cathedral tunes.

Heavenly hurt it gives us;
We can find no scar,
But internal difference
Where the meanings are.

None may teach it anything,
'Tis the seal, despair,-
An imperial affliction
Sent us of the air.

When it comes, the landscape listens,
Shadows hold their breath;
When it goes, 't is like the distance
On the look of death.

—Emily Dickinson

This is one of the most beautiful images I've seen of Yosemite, one of my favourite subjects. The light here is outstanding. I'm hoping to visit next summer. Yosemite is number one on my list of places to visit before I die, and I'm hoping to make it next summer.

@Robert: Thank you for your comments, Robert. Yosemite is beautiful in any season, though summer is extremely crowded and by the end of July the falls are starting to dry. If you must visit in summer, try going as early as possible.

What a perfect mix of words for this image. Complimenting Dickinson is no easy feat - but you have done it my man!

"We can find no scar" until we photograph it and create the permanence.
