Whitney Arch at Sunrise, Alabama Hills, California

Posted by
Gary Hart (California, United States) on 26 September 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

I'm still having fun mining images from last year's Eastern Sierra workshops, and am really getting excited about starting again next week. We begin in Lone Pine, photographing Mt. Whitney from the Alabama Hills, and crossing our fingers for skies like this.

I usually take my groups at least once to the Whitney Arch (aka, Mobius Arch). Photographing popular subjects like Mt. Whitney and the arch is a challenge if your primary objective is capturing something unique. The biggest problem is frequent blue skies and flat light. (The other problem is that there isn't lots of room at the arch for multiple tripods.) So as a general rule I avoid images of the arch unless the conditions (color, light, clouds) dictate otherwise.

On this morning we were gifted with clouds above the Sierra crest. Anticipating nice color, I alerted the group and positioned myself up front, dropping quite low to allow others to shoot over me. While this isn't usually my preferred position, it gave me a somewhat unique perspective that I liked. The best color was south of Whitney, so I went extremely wide, framing Lone Pine Peak (on the left) and Mt. Whitney (on the right) with the arch. The extreme wide angle allowed me to exaggerate the arch and foreground rocks, reducing the mountains to the distance background.

Just unique! That soft, pinky-bluish sky wonderfully offsets the harshness of the rocks.

I love the wonderful texture of the arch in the foreground. The shape has a very "dinosaur" like look about it....I think I need some coffee!

The extreme wide angle helped flatten the mountains in the background and focused on the arch in a way that make me see a beautifully contoured piece of sculpture.
