Dunes and Virga

Posted by
Gary Hart (California, United States) on 31 January 2009 in Landscape & Rural and Portfolio.

Here's one from my Death Valley workshop that just wrapped up Thursday. Scenes like this are why I try to be flexible with the schedule I lay out each day--sometimes you just encounter something that's simply too good to pass up.

In this case we were driving to our sunset location at Aguereberry Point when I saw this backlit virga (rain that evaporates before reaching the ground) above Mesquite Flat Dunes near Stovepipe Wells. I pulled over quickly and we all jumped out and fired off a few shots right there beside the highway. In a few minutes we were back on the road, on our way to what turned out to be a beautiful sunset. More on that later....
